More
than a century ago, when light from electric bulb chased
away the shadows of the 19th Century, it was
considered a miracle. A couple of decades later, when
the first motor car made an appearance, the common man
ascribed its power of location to "assistance from
devil !! " Fire, Hunting Weapons, the wheel, paper,
fabric, the printing press, the industrial revolution,
aviation, penicillin, telecommunication, the conquest
of space, information technology ........ all these and
more punctuate humanity's story & accompany human
evolution through the ages. Technology has become the
mantra today ....... However technology is not everything.
The human mind that invents these gadgets is by far more
powerful.
Attitude
& accessibility play a key role in enabling people
with disabilities to participate fully in society. Despite
several laws that have been passed to safeguard the rights
of disabled people, the Disabled continue to be exiled
from most mainstream activities of human life - be it
education, employment, sports, recreation, travel or
culture. The day this EXILE ends.... Disabled
would be able to walk hand-in -hand with the rest of the
world.
Ms
Nilam Patel recognized this power of human mind, and dedicated
her life to the empowerment of the lesser blessed children
of God, the hearing impaired.
This
organization, Nilam Patel Bahushrut Foundation,
a public charitable trust, was founded on 2nd
Nov, 1993 & is dedicated to Late Shri Manubhai D. Shah
father of Ms. Nilam Patel & Godess Saraswati.
What
does Bahushrut mean? 'Bahushrut' means a learned scholar
who has acquired knowledge through hearing. Hearing impaired
students who study in normal educational setup, do have
to listen to their teachers inspite of their handicap.
Just as every child has a right to food, clothes &
shelter, he also has a right to education. In India, this
can be made possible for Hearing Impaired students only
through integration & mainstream education. The reason
being that special educational facility for them is limited
to Secondary School level education. There are no colleges
specially for Hearing Impaired. Thus the trust was
founded to encourage mainstream education.
